EQUALITY for ALL

Today I announced my commitment to EQUALITY and challenged Rep. Nydia Velázquez for denying equal rights to citizens, while pretending to defend the rights of immigrants.  I am for EQUALITY, Nydia Velázquez is not.  I am EQUALITY, she is not.

President Obama challenged the nation during his second inaugural address, where he demanded EQUALITY for ALL…  but both, Rep. Nydia Velázquez and President Obama have failed the nation for not being true to their words, now gone with the wind.  They have recurred to publicity stunts to give the impression that they are for EQUALITY, while failing to their false promises.

As a Puerto Rican American, born and raised on the island, I know what it feels to be a second class U.S. Citizen, not being able to vote for our Commander In Chief, not having proper representation in Congress, and simply not being treated equally as citizens.  I have been fighting for EQUALITY all my life, both in and out of Puerto Rico, and we have now reached the turning point, where we must demand EQUALITY for all citizens, without exceptions.

Puerto Ricans represent the second largest Hispanic group in the U.S.  The will of the majority must be respected.  Puerto Rico had a plebiscite on November 2012, and for the first time in history, citizens rejected the current colonial status, a failed system that forces thousands and thousands of Puerto Ricans to leave the island every day, the system which continues to adversely impact the quality of life of its citizens at all levels.  It is shameful to see Nydia Velázquez, a Puerto Rican member of Congress, utilizing her influence in Washington to deny citizen rights to her own people, while again, giving the impression to be advocating for the Puerto Rican community, which she clearly does not represent.

The 7th District has a significant Puerto Rican population of approximately 120,000.  These fellow Puerto Ricans have a vested interest in what is happening to the community at large.  They have family members on the island who day to day are suffering the consequences of this failed system and the improper influences from Rep. Nydia Velázquez, constantly denying their rights.

I would like to highlight the relevance of this situation as it relates to immigration reform.  What kind of hope can immigrants and other Hispanic groups have from Nydia Velázquez’s promise that she will defend their rights, when she is denying rights to her own people?  While President Obama has been deporting more people than any other president, Nydia Velázquez has been silent.  Why is voting for the president, having senators and representatives good for immigrants and bad for U.S. citizens from Puerto Rico?

I am committed to comprehensive immigration reform, which recognizes the value of the great majority of immigrants who proactively contribute to the social and economic development of our nation, and also securing the border, in response to our national security interests.  I am committed to comprehensive immigration reform, and people need to know if their representative in Washington is willing to defend the rights of its citizens.

I would also like to share my commitment to marriage equality by saying that it is time to recognize equal rights for same-sex couples, along with the protections, responsibilities and commitment it entails.

Listen… there is only one EQUALITY… Hear me well… you are either for EQUALITY or against it.  I am committed to EQUALITY for ALL.

We can do better to build a stronger America

Today, I expanded on my commitment with the greater New York area’s national and homeland security needs.  I also challenged Rep. Nydia Velázquez for ignoring the strategic value of NY7 as it relates to national security, promising to raise a powerful voice, leveraging our positioning in response to our national security needs.

Vigilance is one of the most challenging components that must be sustained.  In order to do so, we must rebuild/refresh our critical capability and capacity for a new generation of NY constituents in our district, which involves our first responders, educators and communities throughout NY7.

We can do better!  We cannot risk the time of Homeland Security/National Security inactivity.  We need a representative whose goal is to serve on the Homeland Security and House Armed Services committees in order to shape policies for New York.

NY7, which is a three-borough district including Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan, remains the “Center of Gravity” for the cross section of illicit networks involving terrorism, human trafficking, drugs and money.  Our leadership in NY7 will allow us to build a strong network of first responders and a new generation of service men and women by doing a better representative job on these committees.

We have outlined our priorities for NY7, and we must keep in mind that Stability breeds Prosperity.  I am seeking this election to build a stronger America… I want to go to Washington to keep us safe.  Rep. Nydia Velázquez is like the wind…always politicking whichever way it blows…  Unfortunately, we were downwind from catastrophe twice (in 1993 and 2001) and we need leadership that ensures we are ready to reduce the risk of it happening again, and if it does, rise above as we do.  They are still at war with us.  It takes a network to defeat a network.  Ours has to be better.

How many resources has Rep. Velázquez secured for NY’s Homeland Security and National Security needs?  Why hasn’t she voted in Congress to protect our nation? This year, even NY Senators Gillibrand and Schumer urged Homeland Security’s Secretary to boost New York’s share of critical anti-terror funding as NYC remains top terror target in the nation…. Where is Nydia?  Her politics and priorities have taken our eye off the ball.  We need to have the capability and capacity to reduce risk and keep NY7 safe.  We need leadership that will successfully align Homeland Security resources to our first responders and educators.  The leadership influence should go beyond NY7, to the greater NY area, being able to have the regional capability and capacity to deny, disrupt and defeat the illicit traffickers that are harmful to the city.

I will advocate for an education policy to align scholarships to first responders, medical personnel, Coast Guard, firefighting institutes and police academies in order to develop the capability and capacity we need to be ready and sustain the future.  In addition, we need Homeland Security policy to align resources to deny, disrupt and defeat capacity in cyber centers and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in NY.  My proposal also includes Homeland Security resources destined to help the Department of Justice’s High Intensity Trafficking Area (HIDTA) in Puerto Rico.

LET'S TALK ABOUT COMMITMENTS

We are used to hear politicians talk about issues or campaign promises.  Today, I would like to talk to you about Commitments, which reflect a new level of intention, sense of responsibility and engagement.

My 7 Commitments for New York’s 7th District set a new foundation to leverage our communities’ diversity and development, addressing current challenges and connecting with our people at the very core level to learn about their aspirations, leading to the quality of life that we all deserve.

My 7 Commitments for NY7:

1.     I Commit to Integral Education through the development of an initiative supported by local NGO’s and the community, focused on school retention and securing new employment opportunities for our youth
As an educator myself, it’s alarming to see that 56% of the adult population in NY7 has less than a fourth year of high school, which reflects that education and school retention have not been a priority, leading to high unemployment in the district.  The lack of guidance, academic and professional preparation has limited their potential within their communities, while people have been more controlled by the government.  They can’t find jobs and their quality of life has deteriorated.  We must set education as a priority.

2.    I Commit to Entrepreneurship & Strengthening our Small Business Community as the leading source for job creation
Coming from a small business background, I have been able to connect with business owners in the district, and have discovered the incumbent’s lack of support for the small business community.  As chair of the Small Business Committee, besides responding to crony corporate interests, what did Rep. Nydia Velazquez do to help small businesses in NY7 dealing with bureaucracy, tax increases and other impediments that limit their growth and potential?  I propose starting a fund to promote the creation of microenterprises and providing citizens with guidelines on how to start their businesses, which will allow them to create jobs and contribute to the economy, while improving their quality of life and that of their families.

3.     I Commit to Arts Education and the development of a World-Class Arts District as a model for economic development
I have been an artist all my life, started piano lessons when I was 3 and later pursued my career at the Conservatory.  I understand the value and impact of arts education.  It is frustrating to see how funding has been eliminated in schools.  This is why I am committed to find federal funding to reinstate these programs.  We have the potential to turn Williamsburg, Brooklyn into an Arts District as a model for economic development.  We have the resources, talent and infrastructure to transform this area into a world-class arts district, providing incentives for artists to stay in the city, refurbishing abandoned warehouses to create collaborative work spaces and housing, expanding their engagement, which will also be good for tourism and businesses in the area, while enhancing the cultural environment of our people.

4.   I Commit to Equality by supporting comprehensive immigration reform and demanding equal treatment for all U.S. citizens
I AM for equality, Nydia Velázquez IS NOT.   I must question her credibility, promising to defend the rights of undocumented immigrants, while denying the rights of her own people… U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico.  What kind of hope can Hispanics and other immigrants have when she doesn’t even defend the rights of her fellow Puerto Ricans?  President Obama has not taken the lead on immigration reform, deporting more people than any other president, while Nydia Velázquez has been silent.  Comprehensive Immigration Reform and equality for ALL U.S. citizens should be at the top of the agenda in 2015.

5.     I Commit to Public Safety by empowering first responders and engaging our communities, while leveraging our strategic positioning for national security
Nydia Velázquez has ignored first responders in NY7 and the strategic positioning of the area for national security.  I have visited firehouses and police stations to thank them for their service to our nation.  We are living in a post 9/11 world and our threat is real and more serious than ever before… The tension in the Middle East is escalating, we have been threatened by ISIS, and the president keeps improvising, leaving us at risk.  We need to empower our first responders in NY7 and leverage our resources accordingly.

6.    I Commit to fixing Obamacare and securing a fair health plan for our citizens as a result of an incremental reform which has been carefully studied and is well-balanced
There is no doubt that we should fix Obamacare to address the adverse impact of the current health care law on our citizens.  We must increase community health centers and hospitals, reform Medicare to provide seniors with better choices, increase and extend tax credits to small businesses and fund the expansion of Medicaid.

7.     I Commit to Renewable Energy Initiatives, focusing on Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Living conditions for our communities and local businesses
Our goal is to create a model of sustainable living for the vibrant communities in NY7 by combining discipline, sound planning and improving the natural and common areas that will bring prosperity to our people.   By building strong alliances with public and private partners we will advance sustainable development throughout our communities.

I strongly believe that the manifestation of these commitments will set a new foundation for NY7.
Now, it’s up to YOU to make a commitment!

We are less than 50 days away from the election.  An unprecedented opportunity to have a historic victory in NY7 is just around the corner.  YES, IT IS POSSIBLE!

Now, more than ever, we need the economic support to fund this critical last stage of the grassroots operation that will uncover a new majority in NY7.  It is a costly operation, and we can only get up to speed with your donation.
